Music

If You’re a Witcher Fan and Like the Music, This One’s for You!

Toss a coin to your Witcher….

Has anyone else watched and enjoyed The Witcher on Netflix? So awesome. Lots of swearing, some nudity and sex, lots of violence/gore, though, so be forewarned.

One of the things I love most about the show, besides the amazing acting and storylines and characters, is the music. Joey Batey (who plays the loveable minstrel Jaskier) has a wonderful voice and is so much fun, it’s really icing on a magical cake.

Here is a look at some of my favorite songs from the show. Enjoy! (But note that there might be spoilers included for both seasons so far.)

BURN BUTCHER BURN

This one is just beautiful and fiercely furious. Jaskier sings of Geralt–though he denies multiple times that the song is about the stoic Witcher–who left him high (literally) and dry at the end of the second season. The chorus, “Burn, Butcher, burn” alludes to the memories Jaskier has of Geralt (noted in one of the verses, “Now watch me laugh as I burn all the memories of you.”) You really feel Jaskier’s pain.

SONG OF THE WHITE WOLF

Ouch. This one seems to come straight out of Geralt’s thoughts. It’s very emotional, something that Witchers are taught to deny themselves of, and folksy and sad. One of the lines reads as follows, “The song of the white wolf is always sung alone.” Geralt, also known as “White Wolf” or “Wolf” at heart believes he is alone. He’s not human, and even among his Witcher brothers (seen in season two), he’s quieter, more sober, perhaps more powerful. (Note that this song is not sung by Jaskier, but is a a background song of sorts.)

TOSS A COIN TO YOUR WITCHER

HA! I love this song. It’s so light-hearted and fun. What the song means is fairly simple: when a Witcher comes to your village and slays a monster that’s been terrorizing your people. it’s good (and expected) that you pay him…preferably in coin. Hence… “Toss a coin to your Witcher, O valley of plenty!”

And lastly, but not least…

Whoreson Prison Blues

Another funny/fun one, but this one is packed full, as Captain America would say: “Language!” Jaskier sits in a prison cell after being mistaken for a peeping tom, and he sings this little ditty to upset his jailer. There is a very heartwarming reunion immediately after he is interrupted during the second round of it.
