Beth and the Giant Stack of Books to Overcome or be Overcome by

I’m reading quite a few things right now. Some I read from within the past few days. Others? It’s been a while. Like YEARS a while. Also, my TBR (to be read) pile is HUGE! Let’s take a look, shall we?

The cover of "A Trinket for the Taking" by Victoria Laurie

The book I’m about to start reading is A Trinket for the Taking by Victoria Laurie. It looks like it might be a good comparison title for my current WIP (work in progress), whose name I have not put out there…yet. Here’s a blurb for “Trinket”:

“Dovey Van Dalen has a gorgeous day planned for her 200th birthday: driving her new Porsche, admiring the cherry blossoms abloom in her adopted city of Washington, D.C., and a little pampering. But her boss has other ideas. A powerful artifact has been stolen, and he fears it’s causing chaos in the unmagical world . . .

The rich and connected Ariti family has suffered a string of suspicious deaths, with no signs of foul play. Yet each member has died in the way they feared most. As the enchanting agent most skilled at blending in with mere mortals, Dovey must find answers and retrieve the dangerous trinket.

There’s just one unexpected wrinkle: By the time Dovey arrives at the art gallery where the Ariti patriarch died, FBI agent Grant “Gib” Barlow has taken control of the scene. Dovey needs his cooperation to investigate—but she’ll have to hide her abilities, and her true objective, from a man who uncovers deceptions every day. And as they inch nearer a deadly truth, both will face danger even the spellbound would be lucky to survive . . .”

The cover for "In the Veins of Drowning" by Kalie Cassidy

A book that I started reading a few weeks back: In the Veins of the Drowning by Kalie Cassidy. This one *might* not have the right heat level for me, so it could be a DNF, but we’ll see! Here’s the blurb:

“The monster is always slain…

Imogen Nel is in hiding. Hiding from a cruel kingdom that believes Sirens are monstrous, blood-hungry creatures. Hiding from a king and his captain who viciously hunt her kind. Hiding from her own alluring abilities. By keeping herself from the sea, Imogen’s bloodlust is dulled, and her black wings remain concealed beneath her skin.

When a neighboring king comes to visit, Imogen can no longer hide. He knows precisely what she is, and he believes she can save their kingdoms from an even greater monster. But Imogen’s power threatens to violently reveal itself, and the two form a blood bond that protects them both. They flee together, traversing waters teeming with the undead. As the lines between duty to their people and desire for each other begin to blur, Imogen worries her ancestral powers may not be enough to kill what hunts her—the only way to defeat a monster may be to become one herself.”

Other books that I’m reading:

Iron Flames by Rebecca Yarrows (another potential DNF)

The Silmarillion by J.R.R. Tolkien (this one will take me a while)

A Dawn With the Wolf Knight by Elise Kova (another potential DNF)

Scarbound by Evie Marceau (another potential DNF)

Fairy Tale by Stephen King (le sigh. I really want to like this one and am struggling)

A Gathering of Shadows by V.E. Schwab (slow and steady wins the race!)

Dracula by Bram Stoker

Pretty Little Dead Girls by Mercedes M. Yardley (another potential DNF)

A Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson (this is painful to say, but probably another DNF)

The Other Side of Midnight by Georgia Le Carre (yes, another most-likely DNF)

The Serpent and the Wings of Night by Carissa Broadbent (DNFing soon…probably)

Mist and Shadow by Jenna Wolfhart (definitely DNFing)

The White Tower by Michael Wisehart (I haven’t really started this one yet, but Goodreads thinks I’m reading it, so…)

Stiletto by Daniel O’Malley (I’m maybe one chapter in)

Fake Dating a Human by Jennifer Kropf (I will finish this one…someday)

What are YOU reading? Please let me know in the comments! I’d love to see someone with a monster list like mine.

P.S. Have you picked up your copy of Forged yet?
