Writing Books, Making Candles

Recently, I had a reader leave an intriguing review for Brittle (Blade & Bone, book 1.) I don’t always read reviews, but I’m especially glad I read this one, as it had a wonderful idea for a new hobby and/or side business.

Scent is featured A LOT in Blade & Bone, as every fae who casts magic has what is known as a residual burst (read: it’s the smell left behind after they cast a spell.) Each burst is unique to a specific high fae and the lesser fae/elves in their households/groups. So my reader’s idea was to have a line of candles named for each fae.

Ohio laws being as they are, I might only get to do this as a hobby. Plus I need my publisher’s permission, as the characters are currently licensed to them. But wouldn’t it be cool?!

The Residual Magic line could include:

Fenn – citrus fruit medley

Dacre – strong coffee with notes of chocolate

SPOILER – vanilla and brown sugar

Tilda – cloves and cinnamon

(more to come as I do more work on the series)

I’ve been researching making candles and would like to do a few test runs before I sold any/gave any away. So far soy wax, large wood wicks, glass containers, and essential oils look like ideal materials for what I want to do. We’ll see what happens!

I would give credit to the reader who thought of this, but I can’t find their review again after doing a search for it. So if you’re reading this and you made the suggestion: speak up! I’d love to hear you sound off in the comments.

Have you ever bought a book-themed candle? What drew you to it?

Here are some bookish candles that I’ve bought in the past.

Don’t forget to preorder Tempered Glass! As of earlier this week, we had a dozen incentives left.

    1. It does sound like a lot of fun! I hope to get to it sometime in the New Year. Maybe I should put supplies on my Christmas wish list. Who knows? Santa might bring me some! 😉
